Weave Statement on Louisiana v. Callais

April 30, 2026

On Wednesday, April 29, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to limit the scope of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in a Louisiana redistricting case, finding that the state’s map, which added a second majority-Black congressional district, relied too heavily on race and therefore constituted an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. This decision violates the constitution, makes it more difficult to challenge voting maps that dilute the political power of Black and Brown communities and, in practice, further undermines the voices of these communities in the electoral process.
Black and Brown communities have long struggled from a lack of political power, leading to their being disproportionately impacted by toxic chemical exposure, often as a result of environmental racism and the targeted marketing of harmful products. These are the same communities whose political voice continues to be undermined.
The Voting Rights Act is fundamentally about who has the power to shape the policies that impact our daily lives. When voter protections and representation are weakened, so is the ability to advocate for a healthy environment, safer products, stronger regulation, and corporate accountability.
At Weaving Voices for Health & Justice, we recognize that environmental health, racial justice, and voting rights are deeply connected. Those most affected by harmful policies must have a meaningful voice in the decisions that impact their lives, their health, and their futures.
As Justice Elena Kagan wrote in her dissent, “I dissent because the Court’s decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity.”
Weaving Voices for Health & Justice joins in that dissent, recognizing what is at stake for communities whose voices are too often silenced and overlooked. Our work is grounded in the understanding that racial inequities continue to shape both health outcomes and access to democratic participation, and these realities cannot be separated.
