Our Work

At Weaving Voices for Health & Justice (Weaving Voices), we are building a movement for environmental health and gender justice. Through programs like the Weavers Fellowship and initiatives addressing menstrual and intimate care, beauty, cleaning, and fragrance products, we work to reduce harmful chemical exposures and promote safer alternatives. Across all our efforts, we push for transparency, safer products, and legislative change because everyone deserves a healthier and safer environment.

Vaginal Health: Menstrual & Intimate Care

Evidence shows that many of today’s menstrual and intimate care products contain harmful chemicals that can cause reproductive harm, disrupt hormones, trigger allergic reactions, and disturb the vaginal microbiome.

Safe Salons & Beauty Products

Salon workers — a population dominated by women — are exposed every day to chemicals associated with asthma, dermatitis, neurological symptoms, cancer and more in their workplaces. Because of weak laws, cosmetic manufacturers do not have to prove the safety of the ingredients they use, and salon product ingredients are not required to be labeled. When it comes to chemical exposure, salon workers and consumers are at risk.

Safe Cleaning

Certain chemicals in cleaning products have been linked to fertility problems, birth defects, increased risk of breast cancer, asthma and respiratory disorders, and hormone disruption. What’s more, there is no federal law requiring cleaning product companies to list all the ingredients in their products on the label. This means companies can keep toxic chemicals a secret from you.

Fragrance Ingredients

Thousands of synthetic chemicals are used to create modern day fragrances for our products, and over a third of these chemicals have been linked to health impacts ranging from allergies to increased risk of breast cancer. Fragrance is a widespread issue not just in beauty products. Furthermore, these ingredients are kept secret; the vast majority of manufacturers do not disclose fragrance ingredients on their websites or on the product label.

Vaginal Health: Menstrual & Intimate Care

Our research shows that many of today’s menstrual and intimate care products contain chemicals that may cause cancer, disrupt hormones, cause reproductive harm or bring on allergic reactions. The Food and Drug Administration does not require companies to test for all harmful chemicals, nor do they require companies to disclose the presence of all chemicals used in period and personal care products.
